Volunteering with young people

Team player? Love supporting young people? Great at planning?

You don’t need to give 20 hours a week to make a difference. Whether it’s a one hour regular weekly meeting you can help out with, or just irregularly as and when your circumstances dictate, we would love to have you on board here at Kidsgrove. Below are a few of our volunteers. If you’d like more information on how to get involved with Scouting at Kidsgrove, visit our GET INVOLVED section.

Craig
Group Lead Volunteer

Hi, I’m Craig!

I’m the GSL here at Kidsgrove and I oversee the running of the group, with the help of some wonderful volunteers of course.

I was a beaver, cub, scout, explorer, ASL, SL, AGLS and now GSL, so I’ve seen it all here!

Sam
Explorers Team Leader

Hi, I’m Sam. I’m the Explorer Scout Leader here at Kidsgrove. I’ve been running the Explorer section since 2022. I’ve also been helping Jake run Scouts since 2017 – we make quite the team!

I was a Scout myself once (and a Beaver, Cub, and Explorer) and I’ve stuck around ever since because I love the outdoors. I especially love climbing, archery, and hiking.

Jake
Scouts Team Leader

Hi, I’m Jake and my role here at Kidsgrove is Scout Team Leader and Explorer Team Member. I’ve been with Kidsgrove since the age of 10 and the opportunities that I have had since being at Kidsgrove have been amazing. So now it’s my time to give these opportunities back to the kids through my leadership roles.

Will
Social Media Guru

Hi, I’m Will and I’ve been involved in scouting for 18 years now. This has been from a Beaver, all the way to a leader within Kidsgrove Scouts. Now, I take a lead role in running our social media.

Spending my time completing my master’s course in Football Business probably shows I am football mad! If there’s a football round on a quiz, I’m your guy. Alongside football I enjoy watching and playing other sports like golf, tennis, and athletics.

Steve
Treasurer

Hi, I’m Steve. I have been involved with the Kidsgrove scout group for 32 years. I have been looking after their accounts as treasurer for 27 years.  I also help out with their adventurous activities when needed.

Josh
Assistant GLV

Hi, I’m Josh and my role here at Kidsgrove is Assistant Group Lead Volunteer. I’ve been involved in Scouting for 26 years man and boy. I work as a Project Manager for a national housebuilder locally by day and spend one or two evenings at the Scouts helping the Group Lead Volunteer and running much of the fundraising for the group.

Maureen
Beaver/Cub Team Leader

Hi, I’m Maureen and I’m a Beaver and Cub Team Leader. I’ve been involved in Scouting for many years. It has been so nice to see the children progress through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and then onto Explorers, and even continue into Team Leaders themselves.

When not Scouting, I enjoy time away in my caravan with my husband and my lovely Westies, Ellie and Penny. I love to read, knit and cook.

Gill
Squirrels Team Member

Hi, I’m Gill, a Squirrels Team Member I’ve been involved with Scouts for over 13 years in different voluntary roles, and my two boys have been Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. By day, I’m the Nursery Lead at a local Kidsgrove School.

Michelle
Beavers/Cubs Team Member

Hi, I’m Michelle and I’m a Team Member with the Beavers and Cubs.

I started volunteering when my youngest son who has autism started Beavers. By day I’m a full time mum and carer to him. I also have an older son who is now an Explorer, so I’ve been around scouting at Kidsgrove for quite a while now.

Malcolm
Secretary / Trustee

Hi, I’m Malcolm. I’ve been volunteering with Kidsgrove scouts for around 2 years now.

After seeing the impact that Scouting had on my children over the years, I wanted to give a little back.

I don’t work directly with the young ones, I just spend a couple of hours per week helping behind the scenes on the necessary admin to keep the section running smoothly.

Helen
Cubs Team Leader

Hi, I’m Helen and I am the Team Leader of Eagle Cub Pack.  I started scouting with another Cub Pack which unfortunately folded.  I was asked to join Kidsgrove Eagle Cub Pack and haven’t looked back.  I enjoy working with young people, seeing them develop and achieving their potential, sometimes through difficult circumstances.  I work full time in Customer Services for a mobile phone company.

Memory
Cub Team Member

Hi, I’m Memory and I am a Team Member with Wednesday Eagle Cub Pack.  I became involved when my son joined the Cub Pack – he is now in his early 20’s and I never left.  I knew I fitted in when on a Cub Camp, my son enquired where the “parent helper” was and not asked for his mum!  I enjoy my role within the Cub pack and the Group.  I am currently working in the Early Years Foundation Stage at a local primary school

Ken And Rita
Group Vice Presidents

Hi, I’m Ken.  I have seen boys and girls mature into adulthood through their scouting during my 25 years of service.  I have enjoyed being part of Kidsgrove Scout Group and particularly Eagle Cub Pack, which I try to support on a Wednesday evening.  I was pleased to be asked to hold the honorary role of Vice-President, which I accepted with much pride.

Hi, I’m Rita and I am a Sectional Helper with Eagle Cub Pack.  I started scouting, helping with fund raising, when my son joined Beavers.  He is now 35.   I became a Beaver Leader for a short period of time before taking the role of Group Secretary and then Group Chairperson.   My primary role is that of Vice-President, which I too (like Ken) accepted with much pride.

Kershie
Beaver Team Leader

Hi, I’m Kershie, and I’m thrilled to be the Weaver Beaver Team Leader at 1st Kidsgrove Scouts! My journey with the Beavers began after I fell head over heels for the incredible community spirit of the Scouts. When I got an email about a position, I jumped at the chance to join this fantastic team. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some truly amazing people and have loved every moment. I’m passionate about crafting and enjoy creating fun, engaging activities for the Beavers. The best part? My entire family is involved in the Scouts too, which makes this experience even more special.
